Shiatsu massage—what you need to know

What is shiatsu massage?

Shiatsu massage is a therapeutic bodywork that combines Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with contemporary physiological theory. Following the acupressure points of the body, shiatsu practitioners use their fingers, thumbs, elbows, and palms to aid in the flow of a person’s Qi (energy). Tight or tense muscles, knots, and scar tissue can cause an imbalance in a person’s Qi, and working these areas out through shiatsu massage corrects them. Qi can then resume proper flow. Shiatsu can be used as a complementary technique alongside other practices, such as acupuncture and herbal remedies, or as a standalone treatment.

How does shiatsu massage work?

The concept behind shiatsu is that the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the body work in tandem. If one or more of these states are in poor condition, the other areas are affected as well, and disharmony occurs. All areas must be involved to fully heal the body. This means the emotional and mental aspects are just as important as the massage component within shiatsu.

During a shiatsu session, the practitioner will apply pressure to various points on the body, paying particular attention to problem areas. This is to increase energy flow, release tension, and correct any imbalance. Qi also plays an important part in shiatsu, as the practitioner will work with the energy of the patient.
