Remedial massage is a complementary therapy that aims to treat damaged, knotted, tense or immobile muscles. It does this by using a variety of massage techniques, including deep tissue massage, myofascial release therapy, trigger point therapy, and thermotherapy. The massage industry is projected to grow by 15% over the next five years, which will provide you with plenty of job opportunities. On average, remedial massage therapists earn up to $1,038 a week, which can quickly increase with more experience. Remedial massage therapists have a variety of places where they can work, including:
Many remedial massage therapists decide to start their own business and slowly build a list of clients. This can be challenging because you need to take care of every aspect of the business (to begin with at least), but can also be highly lucrative if you’re willing to work hard.
Hospitals and aged care facilities hire remedial massage therapists to help people with palliative care, as well as providing relief from chronic illnesses.
Health and wellness clinics are common across Australia and are the employer for many remedial massage therapists. People usually visit these clinics to relax and unwind, and also to treat ongoing health issues. As a massage therapist, you’ll use your knowledge and skill to help people have a relaxing visit, and to alleviate their pain.
You may also get a chance to work with other natural therapists employed by the clinic, including homeopaths, nutritionists, osteopaths, chiropractors, and others. This gives you a chance to learn from your colleagues, and see whether you’d like to add another natural therapy to your repertoire.
Remedial massage therapists have excellent prospects in Australia. The industry is expected to grow by 15% in the next five years, which will create 15,000 jobs, one of which could be yours.
You will need to complete a Diploma of Remedial Massage to become a qualified therapist. This is most commonly done through an RTO (registered training organisation). This course is a nationally-recognised pathway to becoming a remedial massage therapist. It provides you with a deep level of understanding for massage and how it can help to heal the body.
Course duration: 12-18 months
Study mode: on campus and online learning
Entry requirements: Year 12 or equivalent
Units of study: The Diploma of Remedial Massage course is usually made up of 21 units, with 16 core units and five elective units (one of these must be from the Business Management group). Four elective units can also be from an endorsed Training Package or accredited course, and must be relevant to the work outcome. Electives must also contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.
