What does a remedial massage therapist do?

A remedial massage therapist uses various massage techniques to diagnose and treat biomechanical problems in the body. They use their thumbs, knuckles, and elbows to apply pressure to the muscles and connective tissues, which can provide enormous relief to the patient, and help to resolve issues.

From day to day, a remedial massage therapist can find themselves completing the following activities:

• Assessing a patient’s health history and physical condition.
• Providing stretching exercises to be completed at home.
• Massaging the client’s muscles, tendons, and ligaments to reduce pain, improve their physical function, and boost their mood.
• Using a variety of remedial massage techniques to reduce the risk of future injury, and improve performance in sports. This includes identifying and treating particular dysfunctions of the soft tissues.
• Provide treatment to boost blood circulation, relieve tension of muscles, and promote relaxation.
• Offer complementary therapies like essential oils, mineral therapies, wet compresses, heat or ice packs, and infra-red lamps.
• Keep confidential information on patients, and ensure they are secure.
• Manage the various elements of a small business.

Health and wellness clinics can be found in every city in Australia. They’re a popular place for people to relax and unwind, and cure any ongoing health issues that they may have. You’ll use a number of massage techniques to help achieve this, and to provide a soothing experience.

These clinics also tend to hire other natural therapy practitioners, such as homeopaths, nutritionists, chiropractors, and osteopaths, who you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside.

Medical settings

Clinical settings like hospitals and aged care facilities hire remedial massage therapists, as a way to help people get through palliative care, and provide relief from chronic illnesses.

Private practice

If you’d like to go it alone, you can start your own business. You’ll need to learn and run every component of the company, including marketing, financials, and obviously the massage work itself. Business owners often have to work hard early on while they build their company, but the rewards can be great.

Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015)

This course is a nationally-recognised pathway to becoming a remedial massage therapist. It provides you with a deep level of understanding for massage and how it can help to heal the body.

Course duration: 12-18 months
Study mode: on campus and online learning
Entry requirements: Year 12 or equivalent
Units of study: The Diploma of Remedial Massage course is usually made up of 21 units, with 16 core units and five elective units (one of these must be from the Business Management group). Four elective units can also be from an endorsed Training Package or accredited course, and must be relevant to the work outcome. Electives must also contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.
